When BMW revealed its carryover and minor update models for 2023, a number of notable vehicles were left off the list, giving away the presence of more significant revisions. The R 1250 R and R 1250 RS were AWOL machines.

In order to give us a hint as to what to anticipate when the bikes are formally introduced later this year, BMW has already type-approved redesigned models for 2023.

The R 1250 RS and R 1250 R are being enhanced, but it doesn't seem like there will be any major modifications. According to the type-approval documentation, the 2023 models will use the powertrains from the present versions, which were both released concurrently in late 2018 as bikes for the 2019 model year.

Their relative size changes indicate visual adjustments. Revisions to the electronics could result in more significant changes, but those aren't disclosed in the approvals.

Notably, the models of the bikes have been changed. The current bikes have used the internal codes OJ71 for the R 1250 R and OJ81 for the R 1250 RS since their debut in 2018. These codes change to OM71 and OM81 for the 2023 models, respectively.

For the 2023 versions, the 1,254cc ShiftCam boxer-twin that powers both models remains unchanged, producing 134 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and torque that peaks at 105 lb.-ft at 6,250 rpm.

The catalytic converter, which is used in both models, has undergone some noticeable changes, indicating that improvements in emissions performance have been made.

The second phase of the Euro 5 emissions regulations, which will be implemented in European markets between 2024 and 2025, is likely to be the cause of the change. To ensure that the performance of catalytic converters does not degrade over time, these regulations will implement standardised OBD-II diagnostics.

There are hints that the 2023 bikes' appearance may be altered, however we don't anticipate any significant visual modifications to either model. Notably, the R 1250 RS's proportions have changed slightly for 2023; it is overall a little bit shorter while maintaining the same wheelbase as the present model, indicating a change to the licence plate bracket at the back.

Additionally, it is around half an inch taller than the current model, which would suggest that the windshield's design has changed. None of the dimensions on the unadorned R 1250 R change, but the fact that it was kept under wraps rather than released along with other carryover models suggests that it will have a distinctive appearance beyond basic colour variations.
