Simon Thackeray just wanted to change the clutch. Three years later, the Guzzi is 53 kilos lighter. The engine still has 105,000 km and a new clutch.

The second clutch is due after 105,000 kilometers. The time seems to have come to completely disassemble the 1100 Sport from 1997 and convert it into a crisp single-seater with the Ghezzi Brian “Sport Monza” kit. By the way: The engine is not overhauled and still has 105,000 kilometers.

The “Sport Monza” conversion kit from Ghezzi-Brian consists of a new body with all attachments, an aluminum tank, a new subframe for the front and rear, lighting and a new cockpit. In addition, Simon orders the GP One swingarm made of aluminium. It is 15 millimeters longer and raises the entire chassis by two millimeters.

Lightweight Guzzi

During the conversion to the kit, Simon notices how light the Guzzi actually is and he sees the possibilities. As an electrical engineer, he thinks ahead. And together with his buddy and CNC master Chris, he develops a lightweight solution in aluminum or titanium for almost all the other components.

This is how the fork bridges and the steering shaft are made of aluminium, the exhaust system is welded from titanium. Where possible, carbon is used. For example, Simon takes a negative from the Ghezzi fiberglass fairing and molds it into a new carbon fiber body.

Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport Foundry Motorcycles

The reward for the effort is a whopping 53 kilos of weight loss – and that with the standard rims of the 1100 Sport. The engine remains mechanically untouched and so continues to have its 105,000 kilometers. The new exhaust system and the open filters require a new set-up. Thanks to a new mapping by Guzzi Pope Will Creedon and an oil cooler, the 20-year-old twin is fit for the next 20 years and another 100,000 kilometers.

That’s pure passion: Stripping a 20-year-old 1100 Sport in first ownership during a simple repair and rebuilding it as a lightweight racer. Simon did it with his Guzzi and unscrewed 53 kilos of weight from the bike. The engine still has 105,000 kilometers and has only been retuned.
