The Indian FTR 1200 took a total of 50,000 kilometers under the wheels in the MOTORRAD endurance test. After 25,000 test kilometers, we will take a detailed first assessment and report to you on all the accessories that we have tested so far at the FTR.

The endurance test for the Indian FTR 1200 S began on October 16, 2019. Due to winter and Corona, it took until March until the first service was due at 4,000 kilometers. Cost 267.75 euros including new brake fluid. Shortly afterwards, the hooked fuel filler cap could only be opened with force, it was replaced under guarantee. 

In August 2020, the 8,000th event was due. Cost: 359 euros. When trying to fix the cover glass of the display, which appears to be peeling off, it is unfortunately irreparably damaged. Since one of the inner fork tubes has slight grooves, both parts will be replaced on guarantee after several weeks delivery time.

Shortly before Christmas there was the 16,000 gift. At 529.09 euros, not exactly cheap fun, but also new spark plugs and a somewhat nebulous titled "fine tuning of the injection". But even these measures, despite slight improvements, could not prevent complaints about the cold start and cold running behavior that were not always ready for pressure, as was the case in the first winter. 

Once the starter did not turn at all, a defective fuse was the reason, it was replaced. Starting from freezing point at the latest, the morning start is not always guaranteed, and when it then runs, the first few meters, due to the clutching clutch and stubborn twin, place increased demands on both the patience and fine motor skills of the respective pilot.

Tire recommendation will be delivered later

Shortly before the 20,000 mark, the FTR refused to start after a long drive in the rain. Except for the fuel pump and brake light, the electrics were dead, and the recently replaced display remained black. Diagnosis in the workshop: short circuit in a lighting fuse. A connection with various indicator conversion campaigns cannot be ruled out, in any case the display was replaced again.

In the wet, another weak point of the Indian FTR 1200 S becomes apparent: the almost exposed rear wheel shovels the muck more or less unbraked towards the crew. In addition, the first Dunlop DT3-R tires were so talented in terms of wet and cold grip that we converted to Pirelli Scorpion Trail II after just 1,100 kilometers. And then later on Michelin Anakee Adventure.

In order to save Dunlop's honor, it should be said that the currently assembled Meridian does its job really well. How good should actually be read at this point, because a tire recommendation is an important part of the interim endurance test. 

In this case, however, adverse circumstances prevented the relevant test drives from being completed on time. We will submit the findings later. What we will also submit later is the invoice for the recently completed 24,000 inspection, because immediately after it was done, the workshop went on a well-deserved vacation. Which brings us to the present and the author starts the FTR.

Accessories on the Indian FTR 1200 S

The Indian endurance test has dressed up for the ride: With a windshield, adjustable hand levers and footrests and additionally equipped with a tank bag and side pocket as well as the in-house comfort seat, the Indian FTR 1200 S makes it clear that the first ride can take longer. The fastest way to get out of the city, man and machine warm up. For each other too.

 Clearly, the delayed throttle response, especially in Rain mode, as well as the occasional pushing forward or the pronounced constant jerking jerk a little. You have to come to terms with it. In standard mode, the twin looks much more lively, and in sport mode it even tends to hyperventilate a little.

On the one hand. On the other hand, it can be used to sneak through the city without any bucking or jerking. But horse and rider feel much more comfortable outside of town. 

Due to the unusual tire format of 120 / 70-19 in the front and 150 / 70-18 in the rear, the Indian FTR 1200 S is denied the latest top rubbers and it "has to" use it on the shelf of travel enduro bikes, but their possibilities are usually well above the in the reality feasible. 

The rather narrow pelts support the bustle, and together with the rather high, upright and front-wheel-oriented seating position, the Indian FTR 1200 S conveys a very unique, dynamic driving experience. That is supported by the drive with just as powerful a start as the intake noise. In fast-forward mode, the brake is the spoilsport. 

High manual strength, little feedback and a dull braking feeling were criticized not only once in the logbook. It's good that we have a Brembo replacement in our tank bag. The pads are quickly swapped, and after retracting the front stopper appears in a much more pleasant light. You can read the findings in the picture gallery and inMOTORCYCLE 23/2021 .
