The new Arrow platform from LiveWire, the electronics brand from Harley-Davidson, uses the battery to carry it. This saves weight and can reduce costs.

The LiveWire One is already the first electric model from the Harley subsidiary on the market. In the course of LiveWire's IPO, a new drive platform was announced that will provide the basis for various vehicle and power classes. The biggest difference to the concept used in the LiveWire One and most electric models from other manufacturers is the load-bearing battery. Until now, the battery, motor and spring elements were usually flanged to a classic frame.

Arrow platform

The upcoming Arrow platform works according to a new principle, very similar to current super sports cars: The drive unit, as a supporting component, connects the steering head with the swing arm bearing. There is no longer a main frame. Arrow relies on a large drive block consisting of a battery, motor, battery management and control electronics, to which the steering head is screwed to a subframe. The swing arm is attached directly to the side motor bearings and the shock absorber is supported by a deflection on the back of the battery block. The LiveWire One is still based on an aluminum bridge frame.

High-voltage technology

Details about the battery are already available. The power storage unit is built using round cells in the 21700 format - 21.3 millimeters in diameter and 76.3 millimeters long. LiveWire would like to use these standard cells to configure systems with voltages between 50 and 400 volts. The performance scales accordingly. The cooling system can be designed with air, liquid or air conditioning, depending on the voltage.

Integrated motor

The new Arrow platform has the engine fully integrated and will drive the new models directly without a gearbox. The pivot point lies congruently on the pinion of the final drive, which makes a lot of sense in the case of Arrow. The housing only has to be extremely stiff at this point, and a stable area for the rear wheel suspension does not have to be constructed.

First models

Already at the beginning of 2020, Harley showed the EDT 600 R, a lightweight flat tracker that featured on precisely this Arrow platform. For the near future, LiveWire is already announcing S2 models based on Arrow, which are to be placed below the One. These are supplemented in the following by the light S3 models in cooperation with Kymco. Later, new heavy-duty LiveWire models will follow under the S4 label.
