BMW: eDrive Zones arrive in four new Italian cities

BMW has launched its innovative eDrive Zones in 20 other European cities: Aberdeen, Bregenz, Brescia, Bristol, Cambadge, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Cork, Coventry, Florence, Klagenfurt, Lille, Matosinhos, Naples, Oeiras, Oxford, Sheffield, St. Polten, Toulouse and Verona.   This means even now 138 cities of the Old Continent are benefiting from this pioneering technology. In Italy, in addition to Milan, Turin and Rome where the service was already active, Verona , Brescia , Florence and Naples were added . Over the next year, BMW eDrive Zones are expected to be activated in at least 30 other cities around the world.  BMW eDrive Zones  BMW plug-in hybrids automatically activate full electric driving mode in these areas Within these zones, the German carmaker's plug-in hybrid vehicles automatically switch to 100% electric driving mode as soon as they cross the city center boundary. PHEVs move locally without producing emissions, just like full electric vehicles, and with low running costs since electric motors are much more efficient than internal combustion ones for driving in city traffic.  The car recognizes designated areas using geofencing technology and GPS. The automated eDrive function is available as standard in many of the current and all future BMW plug-in hybrids.  In addition, drivers are rewarded with bonus points for every kilometer driven using the electric motor only and with double points in the eDrive Zones. These can be redeemed for top-up credit. Finally, drivers earn bonus points when they charge their vehicle.
