“Big Boxer” twin-cylinder engine and features that allow you to travel for a long time. A video summarizes the peculiarities of the new BMW R 18 B and BMW R 18 Transcontinental.

Motorbikes

The BMW R 18 B is a “Bagger” type motorcycle without a top case and equipped with a low windshield, a thinner seat set at a height of 720 millimeters and an engine in matt black metallic. The BMW R 18 Transcontinental, on the other hand, is a Tourer with a connotative front fairing, equipped with suitcases and top case. The saddle is present at a height of 740 mm.

These models are reminiscent of the great cruisers and tourers of yesteryear, noting for example the elegant details such as the tubular double-ring frame, the 24-liter drop tank, a finish with double white stripe (optional ex works) and the cardan transmission open. The suspension part also refers to tradition, given a bilateral swingarm and a cantilever suspension system.

Endowment

The instrumentation of both included four circular indicators of the analog type and a color display TFT by 10.25 inches. For those who love music, a Marshall sound system made in collaboration with the British manufacturer is highlighted, with 2-way speakers integrated into the front part of the fairing, black grilles and white Marshall lettering. There are also Marshall Gold Series Stage 1 and Stage 2 audio solutions proposed as optional ex works for intensified listening, adopting up to 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers with 280 watts of total power.

Optional features include: an assisted reverse gear and an Active Cruise Control (ACC) that promotes comfort with distance control through the aid of radar sensors integrated into the front fairing, and also a Hill Start Control function to facilitate hill starts.

The market launch highlights the R 18 B First Edition and R 18 Transcontinental First Edition versions with distinctive features such as a black finish with a double white stripe, the wording “First Edition” and high-quality stitching on the seat.

Also highlighted is a proposal of original BMW Motorrad accessories to customize the new models, adopting parts in milled aluminum developed in collaboration with Roland Sands Design and exclusive options under the name “Option 719”, such as the Option 719 Galaxy Dust metallic finish.

Setting

The frame of the models is of the double cradle steel tubular type with a rear beam consisting of stamped sheet metal parts with welded joints between the steel tubes and the forged or cast parts.

In front there is a telescopic fork with fork covers and 49 mm stems, in the rear area a cantilever suspension system, as mentioned, mounted on the rear swingarm. The rear suspension includes a progressive shock absorber and automatic load compensation. The suspension travel amounts to 120mm and the brake system consists of a double front disc brake and a single rear disc in combination with rigid four-piston calipers. The diameter of the disc is 300 mm in both cases and there is also a Full Integral ABS solution linked to BMW Motorrad.

The engine, as mentioned, is a twin-cylinder “Big Boxer”, a heart of 1,802 cm³. The power reaches 91 horsepower (67 kW) at 4,750 rpm and a torque above 150 Nm is expressed between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.

The arrangement of the footrests is extended or "central", placed behind the cylinders, favoring a comfortable and functional driving position. The new R 18 B is equipped with wider footrests than those of the R 18, while on the new R 18 Transcontinental the footpegs are standard.

We also remember the three riding modes "Rain", "Roll" and "Rock"; in addition to solutions such as the electronic cruise control DCC (Dynamic Cruise Control) with automatic management of the driving speed set by the driver, the engine drag torque control (MSR) and the ASC (Automatic Stability Control) to support safety.
