BMW Shows Off First 2 Series Coupe That's Made In Mexico

BMW 2 Series Coupe G42 was unveiled as the latest version of the compact coupe in July. A more serious development is that production of BMW's latest 2er has already begun at its facility in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. This plant will be the exclusive manufacturer of the BMW 2 Series for the global market, unlike its previous generation which was produced at the BMW Leipzig Plant in Germany. The automaker has committed an additional $125 million to its Mexican plant for the new 2 Series Coupe. "Our Plant integrated a new model two years after it started operations. This was made possible by the talent of the team in San Luis Potosi. Our company is proud to be able to assemble this vehicle exclusively in Mexico for worldwide distribution. With the new 2 Series Coupe, we will demonstrate the enormous capacity present in this country. The launch will be the first of many more successful launches," said Harald Gottsche, President and CEO of BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosi. Additional investment was made for the adaptations made in the Mexican plant, for the expansion of the existing facilities and for the additional equipment needed to build the BMW 2 Series Coupe in 2022. We installed 82 new robots in the body shop, and reprogrammed the existing ones as needed. Additionally, the assembly personnel were trained to work with a shorter two-door coupe body, which requires a different approach from those already in the production li

BMW's Materials Analysis team has also updated the plant's paint shop to produce two new colors for the 2 Series Coupe, Brooklyn Gray and Thunder Night Metallic. This is the paint of the 2er's launch vehicle as well as a new BMW color that is exclusively made at the San Luis Potosi plant.
