2022 Yamaha hints at the YZF-R4's code. If the new model is released, what will it look like?

Over the past three to four months, Yamaha has registered a large number of trademarks for the YZF-R Series family, from the R2 to the R9 (not counting the existing R1). The new registration has already been launched as the YZF-R7, but there is also another interesting model name, the YZF-R4.

If we take a look at the possibilities, Yamaha itself has a similar class as the YZF-R3 (or YZF-R25 for some countries) that comes in the form of a straight-twin engine. Expand the capacity to approximately 400cc, but still use the same 2-cylinder engine as before, it may look redundant in the market too. Because the engine rating of the YZF-R3 is already 321cc.

Therefore, it is possible that Yamaha may have changed the number of cylinders in the engine. Currently, there is a strong movement of the ZX-4R that has the opportunity to launch in the future. It will come with an inline-four engine, while there are still rumors of the CBR400RR going with an inline-four engine (from the CB400 Super Four).

So there's a chance that Yamaha itself will make a 400cc inline 4 cylinder engine, perhaps based on the YZF-R6 and reduce the cc count. A three-cylinder, crossplane (irregular ignition) engine in the entry-level class, both of which may be possible. Or will it still be just a 400cc inline 2-cylinder engine? We'll have to wait and see.
