There is no doubt that Genesis' new small SUV will dethrone the segment's incumbents.

Luxury-car sales follow a hierarchical structure. European brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo typically dominate the market overall, with the exception of niche companies. Then there are the Japanese, who are a notch or two above America's Cadillacs and Lincolns. The hierarchy is well established, but under siege. Genesis, the rising star of the Korean auto industry, is set to usurp the small luxury SUV segment leader and depose segment leaders in 2022 with the Genesis GV70.

The Sport Prestige-trim GV70 certainly sounds hyperbolic, but after driving it, I'm convinced it's one of the best options in its class, if not the best.

The GV70 SUV shares the same underpinnings as the exceptional G70 sedan, but looks even better. Its shield-shaped grille, quad lamp assembly at each end and sweeping body lines make the SUV look upscale without looking like its competitors, unless you consider the Porsche Macan a competitor, in which case there is definitely a resemblance.

Even though the GV70's bodywork is distinct and athletic, it's the interior that knocks our socks off. In top-of-the-line Sport Prestige form, this interior sets new standards. Besides using sumptuous Nappa leather and suede on the seats, there are stunning carbon fiber accents that display a uniquely woven pattern that is unlike anything else you'll find on any vehicle, like the crystal knob on the infotainment system that feels as good as it looks (even though it is almost identical in design and is mounted too close to the rotary gear selector, so you often grab the wrong one).

The interior of this space features a contemporary and fresh oval motif. The climate control and lighting controls are surrounded by a large, curving piece of brightwork at the center of the dashboard. Many of the door accents are rounded as well, including the oval-shaped bezels that surround the handle.

The GV70's cabin is also distinguished by its bright color scheme, which distinguishes it from other luxury SUVs. In addition to beige and black, you can also choose Ultramarine Blue, which appears like deep ocean waters. Havana Brown and Pine Grove Green are both distinctive and attractive, but for those who want something even bolder, Sevilla Red is an awesome crimson.

It also seems a lot more personal and welcoming than the interiors of many German cars and the stuff offered by Japanese manufacturers nowadays. Basically, Genesis has figured out how to push the envelope without going overboard.

Standard equipment includes a 14.5-inch display that rises gracefully from the dashboard, but it isn't so high that it obstructs forward visibility.

On top of that, the console-mounted control dial can also be accessed through a touchscreen, as you navigate the GV70's intuitive infotainment system. Although it can be a bit awkward when driving, the two input options are still great. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as well as wireless charging and a nine-speaker audio system, which can be upgraded to 18 speakers.

In every GV70, a fingerprint reader is built into the dashboard. The system allows you to access driver profiles, start the vehicle without the need for a key, and access valet mode. Additionally, digital key functionality is available. As of now, the feature only works with Android handsets, but I have been told that Apple devices are in the works.

This feature works in much the same way as Lincoln's Phone As A Key, allowing you to lock or unlock the vehicle, load driver profiles or share a virtual key with other people, all from the convenience of your phone.

Additionally, a blind-spot monitor and automatic high beams are included without extra charge.

Genesis calls its adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane centering Highway Driving Assist, which comes standard with heated front chairs, a 12-way power driver's seat, keyless entry with push-button start, and a keyless key. You can also get Highway Driving Assist II depending on your model. The system includes the aforementioned functionality as well as lane-change assist. Highway Driving Assist II has been tested and works seamlessly.

The system does a superb job of keeping the GV70 in its lane and adjusting its speed to match the vehicle ahead. When traffic is heavy, the system automatically stops the GV70 when things grind to a halt and then starts it again once traffic picks up.

In terms of driving, the GV70 offers two engines. In base trim, the car comes with a 2.5-liter turbo-four that produces 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The optional engine is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Engines like this deliver plenty of acceleration and are remarkably refined, but they do not feel especially special.

There is a standard eight-speed automatic transmission in the GV70, which operates seamlessly about 90% of the time, though occasionally you will feel downshifts at low speeds. With all-wheel drive, you'll have improved traction in any condition.

This V6 delivers 19 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. With a combined fuel economy of 21 mpg, the GV70 can be expected to deliver. In general, four-cylinder engines are more efficient, but only marginally.

GV70's steering is well weighted and unusually crisp for an SUV, but the ride is a bit too firm for my tastes, even in comfort mode.

You don't get beat up by this stiffness, but it also doesn't provide much in the way of handling benefits. Although it feels a bit larger than it actually is, this Genesis handles well and shows no signs of irresponsibility when you drive it. It is a competent, but not outstanding SUV from a dynamic point of view.

Although you will have to pay for all this excellence, the cost will not be as high as you might expect. With an entry-level 2022 Genesis GV70 starting at $42,000 including $1,045 in delivery fees, the car undercuts the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 by several thousand each.

Although this Sport Prestige model I'm evaluating here is a bit more expensive, it still checks out for right around 64 grand, which, in light of how luxurious this SUV looks and feels, seems like a bargain. You have 3 years or 36,000 miles free scheduled maintenance and at-home pick-up if you still aren't convinced to try the GV70.

As a result, living with one of these vehicles should be a seamless experience. The 2022 Genesis GV70 has an opulent interior, avant-garde design, and an exceptional driving experience. If you are shopping for a small luxury SUV, this one should be at the top of your list.
