A "pure" motorcycle conjures up images of kickstarters, chrome finishes, and cable throttles for most motorcyclists. Taking us back to simpler times when there were no catalytic converters or electronic nannies. When motorcycles were first introduced, they were easy on the eyes-and the technology.


Nostalgia, as charming as it is, does have its limitations. Hardtails, drum brakes, and carburetors aren't a popular choice among riders. The best aspects of classic motorcycles can be found in modern-classics as well. The R nineT family from BMW tries to accomplish that. LEDs can now be housed in circular headlamps. Wheels with wire spokes can bear retro styling as well as tubeless tires. Trendy and timeless design are not mutually exclusive.


Although all four R nineT models reflect this dual nature in varying degrees, the Pure model embraces the back-to-basics philosophy most strongly. While the Pure's main ingredients remain intact, its focus is on simplicity and practicality over performance. The lightweight aluminum fuel tank has been replaced by a steel tank, a conventional fork replaces the USD front end, and the cockpit incorporates just one round gauge.


Those concessions result in a $10,995 price tag, which makes the Pure BMW's least-is-more option. Since introducing the R nineT in 2015, the Bavarian brand has positioned the neo-retro naked as a customized platform.

That approach just gets taken to a whole new level with the Pure. The base trim is adorned with a Mineral Gray Metallic paint job, making it both attractive and functional. BMW proved, however, that the stock guise is only a starting point when it put an R nineT Pure Option 719 in our possession for a few weeks.


An air/oil cooled boxer engine with a displacement of 1,170cc will be updated with Euro 5-compliant technology in 2021. While the platform's signature bark is muffled by noise emissions regulations, it still delivers 109 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 85 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm.


The upgraded shock absorber comes with a hand wheel adjuster and travel-dependent damping, while the ABS now functions as a cornering system. There are now Rain and Road ride modes available and full LED lighting illuminates the way.


BMW went even further with the R nineT's paint and accessories catalog despite those generous revisions. Each model now comes with BMW's custom in-house Option 719 paint schemes and accessory kits. Those who choose the Option 719 Aluminum package can enhance the R nineT Pure by adding an aluminum front fender, flyscreen, tail cowl, and gas tank for an additional $1,350.


The Billet Pack Classic adds milled cylinder heads and engine front covers for an extra $1,050. Another $975 is added for cosmetic upgrades like spoked wheels and a silencer. Various Comfort Packages, including heated grips and Dynamic ride mode are offered by the Haus der Münchner. The Select Package, however, prioritizes safety with traction control, engine braking control, and adaptive headlights.

The R nineT Pure Option 719 retails for $15,865 after all the extra components, software patches, and destination charges. The R nineT Pure is also $80 below the $15,945 MSRP for the standard R nineT, but not as minimalist as its name implies. We will therefore concentrate on the model's standard equipment, which starts with the big-bore boxer.


The eight-valve, opposed-twin engine has been updated to meet modern emissions standards, but it retains all its vintage charm in 2021. If you twist the throttle while in neutral, the bulletproof boxer still jolts to the left. At high revs, vibrations are felt through the handlebars and foot pegs. BMW preserves these quarks, referring to them as part of the R nineT's "character".


While the Bavarians may still hold on to their old ways, the boxer now delivers an even stronger punch in the mid-range. During Road mode, those pulses are harnessed with linear power delivery, while Rain mode dampens the effect for safety reasons. Unsurprisingly, the mid-range surge is most prominent in the optional Dynamic mode. As a result, those looking for maximum performance may opt for BMW's Comfort Package, but the Pure's Road mode impressed in nearly all situations.


A Euro-5-compliant tune also produces lean fueling at the low-end, while the flat-twin went flat out in the midrange. The clutch had to be baby-sitted away from every stoplight after I experienced a few unintended stalls. Combined with the engine's high rpm vibes, the low-end fueling produced a narrow range of usable power, and that quality was most evident on twisty roads.

With no slipper clutch, quickshifter, or auto-blipper, the R nineT was best ridden with smooth inputs and patience. Throbbing through the gears aggressively only unsettled the big boxer and, in turn, the chassis. As a result, R nineT riders are encouraged to let corners come to them.


The modern-classic comes into its own at that point. Flowy canyon roads are no problem for the 43mm fork and steering damper, while the Metzeler RoadTec tires provide plenty of grip for the available lean angles.


Even though the Pure weighs 500 pounds, it's not the nimblest Beemer out of the bunch, but the centralized mass makes side-to-side transitions easier than expected. Two-up riders will appreciate the rear suspension adjustment knob, but single-seat riders will set it and forget it.


After experimenting with the top and bottom settings, the mid-position produced the best feeling without sacrificing too much comfort. While the ride may be described as luxurious, it's hard to call it so in any setting.


Conversely, the Brembo four-piston calipers and dual 320mm discs outperformed the spec sheet with a strong bite and direct feel from the axial master cylinder. Despite the rear brakes being less responsive than the front one, the rear Brembo binding and 265mm rotor did a good job of steadiing the 483-pound car at slow speeds. It may not win any performance shootouts, but it certainly fits the bill for road use on a regular basis.

As I put a leg over the Pure for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by its wide handlebars, broad seat pan, and narrow midsection. Since the foot peg is low, the knee is positioned at a 90-degree angle, causing the hard parts to drag more rapidly. On top, the reach to the bars is a little tight, but the tank cutouts assure that the rider's wrists are not put under undue strain. Pure could double as a good touring bike if it weren't for fragile padding and ineffective wind protection.


While it is a great car for urban environments, it is also great for twisty canyon roads when in its stock form. The factory-installed bench seat is functional, but the optional seat cowl adds an extra touch of style.


Furthermore, the tail unit serves as a storage compartment as well as a locking system. Disc locks, hats, and small tools can be stored in the rearward cubby thanks to the removable backplate. Naked bike riders will find it useful, even if it can't replace their backpack or fit their groceries.
