It seems Germany has just gotten a lot more aggressive in its campaign to dominate the American touring motorcycle market.

With the introduction of BMW's R18 cruiser last year, the brand returned to form while also redefining cruisers as a class of their own. The R18 was one of the few K cruiser models with two air-cooled cylinders and a simple interface, while other models featured liquid-cooled, inline-six cylinder engines. By extending the R18's presence, BMW hopes to attract some traditional American cruiser and bagger buyers.

We previously reviewed the BMW R18 B and R18 Transcontinental -- which we didn't love, as you might expect. The R18 B and Transcontinental differ from that bike in that they have an enormous front fairing and hard saddlebags, along with an additional top case on the Transcontinental. Although there are mid-mounted foot controls on this model, the German take on an American formula is quite appealing.

The luggage and fairings are the most noticeable differences, but they don't tell the whole story. Transcontinental gets a bunch of gauges, including four analog ones as well as a Marshall audio s
ystem controlled by a 10.25-inch TFT touchscreen. It also gets a heated seat, which we love. In a R18 B, the seat is slimmer, and the windshield is lower, so it is a bit more minimal.

The optional Active cruise control (read: BMW-speak for adaptive) is another major upgrade from the base R18. We're used to the system we have on the Ducati Multistrada V4 and on a motorcycle like this -- a motorcycle designed for long interstate rides -- that will be a real blessing and a major advantage for BMW over Harley or Indian.

BMW expects to have the BMW R18 B and Transcontinental in dealers sometime in August for a retail price of $21,495 and $24,995, respectively.
