The Harley-Davidson Sportster S has been made continuously for over six decades. [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster is only known for two periods in history: the Ironhead era and the Evo era, despite its nameplate dating back to the Eisenhower administration. Throughout the model's history, a 45-degree V-Twin engine has always been at the heart. Platform features included a strong powerplant, cradle frame, conservative styling, and spartan accommodation. In 2021, however, all that changes.

With this car, Brembo brakes are standard, while six speeds on the gearbox and LED lighting are available for the first time. This historically entry-level model gains premium status overnight with its feature-rich electronic suite. With a daring new design, the Revolution Max engine and model's performance ambitions are brought together. Although it is a V-twin, the 1,252-cc, 60-degree engine doesn't deliver the cruiser's unique vibe. Instead, it delivers 121 horsepower. Even though it's a sexagenarian, the 2021 [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster is faster than ever.


As a way to demonstrate the new model's mettle, the Motor Company invited us for a day of riding through the picturesque canyons of the Angeles National Forest and the man-made canyons of Downtown Los Angeles. Naturally, there were some questions after such an important transformation. Will the 2021 interpretation appeal to the customer base? Will it maintain its David vs. Goliath approach? Is it still a Sportster [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] ? [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Harley's V-twin engine powers all of its bikes.

Engine:


A MoCo Evolution engine has powered the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster since 1986. The Harley-Davidson Sportster S continued to champion the bulletproof Evo after the Big Twin class moved on to the brand's Twin Cam V-twin. Its crudeness did not matter at all when its charisma was overshadowed by its low-square, air-cooled, and turbulent design. Instead of refining the platform over the years, Harley-Davidson Sportster S didn't repair what wasn't broken.


35 years later, it reinvented the model with its aptly named Revolution Max engine. In the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S, the liquid-cooled, DOHC, 1,252 V-twin gets a cruiser-appropriate retune. The Revolution Max 1250T concedes 29 horsepower to its adventurous cousin, but it's hard to tell the difference while riding.


The [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S does not spool up until its powerband, as the Pan America does. Well, in Sport mode, at least. There's a pleasant difference between Road and Rain. Two additional custom ride modes allow users to adjust power delivery, traction control ABS parameters, and engine braking settings to their liking. No matter what You can choose whether to ride for chills or thrills with the Sportster.


In Sport mode, performance reigns supreme. Upon the first throttle crack, 94 lb-ft of torque is generated, reaching its maximum at 6,000 rpm. With a rev range of 9,500 rpm, the 1250T shines in the mid-range, but power is easily accessible throughout the range. Sport mode, however, displayed a very abrupt on/off quality, while throttle-by-wire had a much smoother response.


My seat was like a plank and I was often pushed beyond it when slick roll-ons occur. What Sport mode lacks in finesse, it makes up with enthusiasm, so I reserved it for highway and canyon duty. The Road mode smoothes out the power pulses in the city without sacrificing enough raw acceleration. Nevertheless, the Revolution Max and the high-mount exhaust system are very hot when used on surface streets.


Despite the rear cylinder deactivation on the Harley-Davidson Sportster S , the tracker-style pipes trap engine heat under the seat, in addition to contributing to it. A heatwave first spreads to the right leg of the rider, which is expected, but the portside of the engine does likewise not long after. While in motion, the heat is unnoticeable, but at a stop, my right foot was forced to rest on the peg due to the heat. Otherwise, the exhaust could easily broil my inner thigh into a medium-well shank.


The Revolution Max is still the star of the show despite its drawbacks. Harley-Davidson Sportster S needed a slew of auxiliary components to complement its star performance.

Chassis


The [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S chassis consists of three separate frame sections and is unlike anything else the company offers. By bolting directly to the 1250T engine, the front, middle, and tail trellis frame units are less heavy and more rigid.


Additionally, the handling is significantly better than before, with a maximum lean angle leaping from 28 degrees to 34 degrees. Tip-in and steering rate are predictable and stable.

The [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster is surprisingly agile despite its 160/70 Dunlop GT503 front tire and 180/70 rear tire mounted to 17-inch wheels.


Similar to the front braking system, the 320mm single-disc unit seems underpowered for a 121-horsepower machine, but the Brembo master cylinder provides excellent bite along with nuanced feedback and feel. Obviously, we'd love to see what the Harley-Davidson Sportster S would be like with a thinner tire setup and a dual disc setup, but the stock equipment is much better than we'd expected.


A similar fate befalls the rear suspension. The Showa monoshock is one step away from a hardtail, since it only features 1.5-inches of travel. Even though the unit performs better than the spec sheet thanks to the linkage system, there are still some limitations to the setup. Despite the shock's eagerness to absorb slow-speed bumps, it was less tolerant of fast bumps. I was bucked out of my seat or hit directly through the back by several large hits.


In addition to its low, aggressive stance, the model has a limited suspension travel. In spite of the piggyback unit's handicaps, the monoshock on the sportiest Sportsters performed admirably. Fortunately, the fully adjustable USD fork does not suffer from similar issues.

Although its forks are only 3.6 inches in length, they never bottom out under hard braking or a lot of resistance.


In a corner, the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S holds its line in a smooth and predictable manner. The Dunlop GT503 is well suited to it, offering enough grip and feedback to inspire confidence. When entering a corner, the 500-pound rig is stabilized by dragging the single piston rear caliper.


Canyons were the perfect environment for the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S. The model holds its own in the city, but it reveals its naughty sporty side on a curvy road. It is true that the Sportster's performance is largely a result of the high-quality components and adjustability, but the rider's posture is also a contributing factor.

Cockpit


Inseams with up to 29.6 inches should be able to fit the S model's seat height. It is effortless to flat-foot the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster despite the large heat shields pressing into the rider's right leg. The rider's upper half is leaned forward and his elbows are bowed as he reaches the bars. Legs are positioned at a 90-degree angle with feet pointed upwards on the foot controls, but legs are at a 90-degree angle with the foot controls.


By shifting the rider's weight forward, the forwards increase long-distance comfort, as well as getting him off the pegs. In light of that, the mid-control [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S was my preferred choice despite the acute leg bend. I would upgrade to this if the mids provided greater control. Customers can buy a $600 conversion kit from the Motor Company instead of mid control.


Despite the 34-degree lean angle achieved with forwards and mids, the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster is most effective with the mids. The thinly padded seat caused my back to ache after several hours of forward control.


In addition to the extended shift lever, [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Harley has also fitted the forwards with longer controls (in comparison to the mids). Taking off in first gear resulted in a number of unintentional shifts into neutral due to the lever's long throw. On the mid controls, I did not experience the same problem.


There is a possibility that the mids will prove too difficult cramped for taller riders. The rider triangle fits comfortably around my five-foot-10-inch frame, but it will depend on the user's needs and preferences what will work for them.



Lastly, the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster family has a brand new round, 4-inch TFT display. Even though new buttons and switches are added to the switchgear, the user interface remains intuitive and straightforward. In addition to checking each metric impacting performance, the rider can check ambient temperature, engine temperature, tire pressure and battery voltage.


Navigating, identifying incoming calls, and playing music is now possible through Bluetooth. However, a GPS receiver is not included on the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S, so those functions are provided by the rider's smartphone. Additionally, the helmet and motorcycle communication systems will not be interconnected without speakers.


However, the small screen real estate can be a restriction in navigation and diagnostic modes, in spite of the new infotainment system's technological advance. Especially with speed, it's easy for fonts to become unreadable when there's so much information packed into a small space. As a result, I opted for the standard gauge setup, which combines a large mph display with tachometer needles, gear position indicators, and trip meters.

Conclusion


In 2021, the [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster S will mark the end of the world's longest-running production motorcycle. The [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster has evolved from side valves to overhead valves to four valves per cylinder, but its latest form is a major departure from the previous generation. Harley's Sportster S is positioned to appeal to existing, performance-oriented [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Harley customers as well as draw new ones to the brand.


As the company's historically entry-level car, the 500-pound model has 121 horsepower and is lighter than its other cruiser models, making it more powerful than ever. By [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Sportster standards, the 2021 S model is a marvel, warts and all. Its potential is even more compelling than its impact on [Harley-Davidson Sportster S ] Harley's history.


As the Bar and Shield fills the slots under the flagship trim, we're excited to see what they do with the platform. 


Harley-Davidson Sportster S plans to expand the Sportster's possibilities for 64 more years. It isn't your granddad's Sportster, it is something entirely new.
